Dermaplaning and micro needling. I know what you’re thinking, “what exactly is that?” Now if I say, exfoliating using a scalpel and vampire facial, you’re thinking, “oh I saw Kim Kardashian do that so I have to try it” OR “oh I saw Kim Kardashian do that so I have to boycott it.” Kardashian or not, there are different ways of executing this said facial and my experience was a style by jr one. (Pausing for reaction…I know I’m not legendary like Kim K but you should still listen to me when I tell you to book a dermaplaning and micro needling sesh ASAP at The Loft!)
Let me start with how my appointment began. I walked into a chic medispa and felt like I was at home. Warmly greeted by Jennifer Dennett, Owner and Certified Laser Technician, Medical Aesthetician, I was instantly comfortable. Yes, the thought of having razors and needles in and around my face made me a little nervous but the second I met Jennifer, I felt completely at ease. I also want to point out this is not your average medispa. It is aesthetically attractive (with gold accents, my fave), it is welcoming, fresh and clean but most importantly, this space portrays Jennifer in a way you know she is going to give you the finest service with the greatest results. And she did!
(My kind of reading!)
So, with that said, let’s get down to the dirty details. I do mean dirty; my skin was unpolished before Jennifer came into my life. As discussed with the maven, I have dry, dehydrated skin so these procedures are suitable for my skin and will act as a preventative to pesky fine lines, wrinkles and taking the plunge on Botox.
It’s addicting. One session and I’m hooked. This is a method of exfoliation that consists of using a 10 gauge scalpel to gently exfoliate the top layer of dulling dead skin cells in order to reveal a smooth, bright complexion. Oh boy am I smooth, soft and supple. I no longer have that annoying peach fuzz on my face (moustache included – don’t pretend like you don’t have one) and that gross dead skin build up in the crease of my chin, well, she gone! This treatment is also great before other medispa procedures as it allows products to dive deeper into your dermis. This is the most exceptional exfoliation I have ever experienced. Truth, I was nervous I’d grow a beard after this service. Fact, I have not and will not be growing one. I still don’t even notice any regrowth in facial hair and my skin remains smooth to the touch. Ladies, be advised that this is not like a hot shave so don’t be worried.
Tip from the pro: calling all brides! Do this before your wedding and your makeup will glide on flawlessly for perfect pics! No joke, it’s like butter afterwards. #dermaselfie
This treatment is recommended for all skin types except for acneic skin.
AKA collagen induction therapy aka vampire facial (but this one doesn’t use blood platelets like Ms. Kardash did). As I mentioned, I have dry, dehydrated skin but these treatments helped to remove dead skin cells, reduce the size of my pores, helped in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and introduced collagen and elastin so I can continue looking…18? (a girl can dream.)
So, following the dermaplaning session, Jennifer froze my face. Relax, it was with a topical cream and it gave the two of us some time to chat! Once I felt like I looked like I came from the dentist, we started the needling. If you know me, you know I hate needles and can barely talk about taking blood, so yeah, I was a tad tense. This way of vamping my face was super easy to accept because it is a pack of tiny needles strategically bundled in a pen. I liken this to the look of an insulin pen. The needles are drawn across facial sections in a cross-hatch pattern until Jennifer is happy with the results. This allows for the serum she is applying during the needling to enter deeper into the skin versus a strictly surface level facial.
It was explained to me that how deep the needles penetrate the skin differs on what part of the face is being attended to. In my forehead, they didn’t go too deep because there isn’t a lot of cushion there. My cheeks were deeper than my nose and because I took it like a champ, we did the needling twice over my face. I experienced some injection-site bleeding but truthfully, I’ve had worse paper cuts. This was sincerely a fabulous feeling and you must believe me when I say this did not hurt because I’m a baby when it comes to, well, a lot of things.
Following my treatment, Jennifer lathered me with SPF (which should be vital in your daily facial routine) and lovingly sent me on my way with a cream cleanser and vitamin C serum. I walked out super casually to try and counter-act just how red my face was. Nothing to see here folks! I have extremely sensitive skin so this is not unusual.
My skin was naturally a little more sensitive because I was just poked and prodded but I embraced the hell out of it. I felt so feminine! I know that sounds peculiar because I didn’t have a stitch of makeup on and my face looked like I walked into a wall but I felt sparkling and like my skin could breath. Even a few weeks post-treatment, I still feel like my makeup goes on smoother, I’m not pinching at pesky zits or pores and even though I paint my face every day and the effects of this dull weather don’t positively contribute to fine feeling skin, I still feel like my skin can exhale. I have also noticed a significant difference in the size of my pores. They are much harder to see expressly in those high frequency areas, nose and chin.
I would recommend scheduling your appointment around your social calendar. Give yourself the day to recoup. The day after my treatments, my skin felt a little tender, think sunburn, but again, I’ve had worse sunburns than what I experienced with this. Overall, any “discomfort” (I use that word loosely) I felt was beyond worth it and I will absolutely be doing these procedures to prep for my wedding and maintain positive skin health!
The Eclipse MicroPen is safe for anywhere on the body, and is safe for all skin types. Because [this treatment does not introduce] any thermal damage to the skin, [it] works very well on darker skin types as it reduces the risk of hyper/hypo pigmentation.
